 Ching-Hua Fan Dr. Dennis Fan (1970 – 2013) On July 25, 2013, Ching-Hua (Dennis) Fan passed away after a nine year battle with brain cancer. Fan was a lecturer at the FIU Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering. He joined FIU in fall 2002 after one year in postdoctoral training at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Fan received his master’s and Ph.D. degrees from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1998 and 2001 respectively. He received a BS from the Feng Chia University Department of Mechanical Engineering in Taiwan in 1992. Fan’s research interests were in the investigation of novel ultrafast laser-based techniques for measuring, materials processing, microfabricating, and nonlinear imaging biomedical and microscale engineering systems. Fan’s wife described him as, “a fun loving, caring, and independent man. He always treated families, friends, colleagues, doctors, and nurses with respect and gratitude more than anyone could have ever expected. He once said, ‘The purpose of life is to live it to the fullest in doing what is meaningful to you, while the length and years of life is not that important’”. According to his mother, his sole purpose and dream was to live a life in doing what he is good at and in return give back to the community, so there could be a change in this world, a change to a better world. “I thank all of you present here for all your support over the years and for the many more years to come. Even though Dennis is gone, I know I am surrounded by loving, caring, sincere friends like you as always. Thank you,” said Fan’s wife in a message about his passing.
